You will be missed, Meredith...
|
On September 26, we were saddened to hear the news of our dear friend Meredith Knopf's passing. Meredith was a pillar in our running community and will be greatly missed by many. She was a manager here at Running Central pushing nearly two decades and was an incredible influence on the evolution of the store. Our customers grew to love and admire her for her warm, friendly, and energetic demeanor and helpful advice that she gave to walkers and runners alike, no matter what their fitness level. We will always appreciate everything she did for us and others and will always hold a near and dear place in our hearts! |

| "Why Do You Run" Essay Contest Winner...Laura Crisp! |
In the cool morning I catch a glimpse of a person walking down the street: strong, dedicated, powerful. My vision adjusts; I realize it is me.
Clumsy and uncoordinated, I always rejected athletics. I sat down, made excuses, and let life pass by. On my bucket list--next to learn glass blowing--was finish a marathon: impractical whim or deep-rooted yearning? Once I tried but was quickly sidelined with an injury brought on by naivety and overzealousness. I quit, packed away my training
guides and running clothes.
I packed away that dream, sat back down, and gave up on myself.
Every year I plodded through the Race for the Cure, vowing next year would be different. Once I finished after they took down the clock; that humiliation birthed a goal: finishing with dignity. All my old feelings--wanting to do more, be more, finish a marathon--came back. I stood up, brushed off my old dreams, and took a hesitant step.
This time I kept going. I have no illusions that I am a runner or jogger; I am a walker. But I am a marathon walker. I never skip days, never cut miles. I walk at 2 AM, in heat, humidity, or torrential downpour. I walk an out-and-back again and again; my neighbors no doubt assume I have lost my mind.
Every step I take is me walking away from my old self, hesitant steps becoming stronger--not faster, but stronger-losing myself with each step, and finding myself.
***Thanks to Laura for sharing her story and reminding all of us why we love running and walking in central Illinois!***
